Rev3Tri Run Across America Door Prize Time!!

My Rev3 teammates who are running across America just crossed into New Mexico yesterday. They have been running now for over 6 days and still have 15 to go to reach the finish line in Washington, D.C. If you are interested in checking out their progress click here. There are a lot of AMAZING pictures as well as blog posts from the runners. The pictures really give me chills just looking at them. So epic. I have been doing my own virtual Run Across America with my teammates that aren't doing it for real! I missed the first two days, which bummed me out a little, but since Wednesday I've managed to get at least a little run every day, even if it is only a mile. I'm hoping to keep the streak up all the way to the finish line!

Thanks to everyone who has entered my Rev3Tri Run Across America raffle so far! Rev3Tri Run Across America Raffle - Win 3 months of Triathlon Coaching!

So maybe you have heard that the staff of Rev3Tri is running across America?? That's 3,080 miles to be run over the course of 21 days!!

And while that is an amazing feat in itself, the real goal here is to raise $100,000 for the Ulman Cancer Fund.
The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults Patient Navigation Program offers comprehensive health services to young adult patients, working in conjunction with multi-disciplinary medical care teams, social work staff, and other care providers. The program is currently administered at the University of Maryland Greenebaum Cancer Center, the Sandra & Malcolm Berman Cancer Institute at Greater Baltimore Medical Center and Georgetown Hospital’s Lombardi Cancer Center. UCF is also in the process of implementing their programs at additional hospitals including Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Alvin & Lois Lapidus Cancer Center at Sinai Hospital.

While I would love to be able to take of for 3 weeks and literally run across the country, that is just not in the cards for me, so I've been trying to come up with ideas to do my part.

Back in the Saddle

Between yesterday and today I was able to get in 90 miles on the bike (my new frame....more to come on that) OUTSIDE! It felt so good to ride in the sunshine! It was super warm here this weekend and today I was riding in short sleeves and slathered in sunscreen!

Despite feeling so good to be outside, both of these rides were much slower than I expected. I am dealing with quite a bit:  new bike, new fit, new saddle, first outdoor ride of the year (which I am always a little nervous about), and first ride out since my crash in September. After I saw my average yesterday I was very upset at how slow it was.

I shot Sonja an email of despair, in my defense, something that I do not do very often. She reminded me that it's early days still, and I did have quite a bit on my plate for that first ride out. It's funny because I often get emails like this from my own athletes and know all the right things to say, but when I have to deal with it on a personal level it is much more difficult!

I left my despair languishing in my Training Peaks comment box and set out again today. I was still slow, but I was also hopeful and positive that I am doing the absolute right thing for my training and my body right now. I had a lot of thoughts flowing through my mind and what kept coming back over and over again is that I need to let go of my huge EGO and just accept my body where it is right now and trust that it will not betray me and come around. I'm sure I am not the only one who has to learn this lesson over and over again, right?

About the bike, I got my new frame last week (my old one was cracked in the crash.) I'm still settling in and testing a new saddle as well. I'll post some pics as soon as I have gotten to know him/her a little better. We are still just acquaintances...

One other thing I noticed on my ride today is that I am definitely still a bit jittery since my crash. I am much more cautious and probably rode out of aero much more than normal because it just felt safer to me, especially on busier roads. I'm glad the first is out of the way and now I can just settle in and start to love riding again.

Oh, wait...I never stopped loving it!!

this and that

Wow! I have had a lot going on and it seems like my blog is taking the brunt of my business! I have totally been missing this and all of you!

Thanks to all of you who left kind words about my friend, Pete. It really meant a lot to me and to his wife as well.

I am happy to say I am all healed from my random bowling injury and am plugging away at my training. This week I swam my longest swim EVER clocking in at 4300 yards! It was amazing. The time just flew by and I felt stronger and stronger throughout the swim. It really gave me a lot of confidence about the 2.4 mile swim of a full distance triathlon. I am happy that my shoulder didn't argue with me at all.

I also had a wonderful run today. We have been having AMAZING weather this week. I had a long run on tap and coach wanted me to run three 20 min. segments at a certain HR. She said she would prefer that I do it on a loop so each lap was basically the same and then we could compare. At first I was kind of not looking forward to it, but then I just decided to embrace it and off I went. I decided to turn the auto lap of my
Garmin off so I wouldn't obsess the entire run about what my pace was. (Usually every time I see my mile splits I either rejoice or despair at the number.) It was really nice to just settle in an run, and I loved the idea of having a 20 minute lap. The amazing thing is that for each of the 20 min. laps I ran exactly the same distance. It wasn't fast, but it sure was steady!! What is that story about the tortoise again???

The boys have been loving the great weather as well. I basically let them come inside for a snack and a bathroom break after they get off the bus, then shoo them outside again. They have been playing together so well and just seem happier now that they can get outside and just run!

The great weather has also inspired me to go through my closet and switch everything over to spring and summer. It's so nice to see bright colors hanging in there again. (Don't worry, the warm stuff isn't locked away just yet...I'm expecting at least one more bout of cold weather before spring is here to stay.) I also really cleaned out a lot of clothes that either I don't wear anymore or just really don't like anymore, but still wear because I feel like I should. My plan is to not really buy anything new this year that I don't absolutely a. need and b. love. This should also help with our budget. ;)

I haven't ridden yet outside, but that is on tap for this weekend on my new frame...more to come on that soon!!

This past Thursday I met one of my new 70.3 athletes at his pool to watch him swim. Since I always swim at the Y, I have never really explored other swimming opportunities that are close by.

As it turns out, I met him at the local high school which is about 5 minutes from my house (the Y is about 20), but on my way there I was a little, shall we say, worried, because I had never been to that pool before.

I wasn't exactly sure where to park.

I didn't know exactly which door to go in.

I wasn't sure if there was a locker room.

I was a little bit worried that the other swimmers wouldn't look kindly to me just jumping in to coach someone (although my athlete assured me all was fine.)

I ended up getting there super early and waited around to meet my athlete. I had parked in just the right spot. I went in the exact right door. And the pool was easy to find, just like he said it would be. There was a locker room that someone showed me, and I was welcomed by all the other swimmers with smiles and handshakes.

Why was I worried? The thing is, I feel pretty comfortable going into situations like this and I was still a little bit anxious. I am happy that I have discovered another place to swim that is cheap and a closer option than my Y. I never would have found this out if I didn't actually go!

So what is my point with all of this? It just got me to thinking about how a lot of people don't try new things because of barriers. What if I go to a new gym and don't know where the workout room is? What if I am uncomfortable changing in the locker room? What if I go in the wrong door of the pool? None of these are small concerns and if you match them with a person who has never done any of these things, to a person who has maybe never set foot into a gym, they become huge barriers, both physical and mental, that require great fortitude to cross.

I think I have a tendency to pass quick judgment on people who do not exercise for whatever reason. The fact of the matter is, I have no idea what their barriers are. A better thing for me (and all of us who are comfortable with these barriers) is to find a way to help them tear them down. Smile at the new person in the gym. Ask the lost looking person if they are looking for something. Help the first-timer figure out how to get the treadmill started.

Let's start tearing down barriers.

Gutter Ball

Last week both of the boys were off school for winter break (or what I like to call just another reason to be a teacher), and in an effort to make it a true winter "vacation" I tried to schedule some fun activities for them. They saw the Star Wars 3D movie with Kel on Tuesday while I was in Ithaca, we had multiple play dates (at one point I had 4 boys at my house), and we went bowling or what I will now call my downfall.

Now, let me say that I am in no way a "bowler." I am really, really bad. But since my crash, I have noticed I have taken bad to a whole new level because my shoulder really wants nothing to do with bowling. This is definitely not a tragedy since I was never in the running to become the next great professional bowler. Anyhoo, I decided that I would bowl one game with the boys and then they could bowl the rest with the other mom that came. I was about 3/4 of the way through a very dismal game, getting beat by both 8 year olds AND both 5 year olds (in my defense, they were using bumpers and I was not), and I went to let go of the ball and something went very, very wrong in my back.

It was a deep, sharp pain in the right side of my lower back. It was definitely not good. I finished up the game with a grand series of gutter balls and came in last with a score of 48!

On Friday I ran, which amazingly didn't bother my back at all, and I swam which only bothered my back when I turned - ouch! I probably should have gone to see my chiro on Friday, but with both boys it's really hard and I decided it could wait until Monday. Coach pulled all of my workouts for the weekend, which sucked, and Monday I hobbled into the chiro to find out that I had sprained my SI joint and it would be about a week until it was feeling better.

The good news is, while not 100% just yet, it is definitely feeling better. The bad news is that I have basically had 2 recovery weeks in a row and haven't been on my bike in over a week. Ugh.

Stupid bowling injury. The lamest injury ever. I will never bowl again.
